Mercedes Benz Estate E320 Estate (S211), buying tips
Facelifted 2006-on S211s seem the most dependable and the E320 five-door delivers a whopping 398lb ft of torque from just 1,600rpm, which holds up well even by today's heady standards. As a result, performance is impressive, even when heavily laden. The official 0-62 mph time is 7.3 seconds and top speed is respectible 149mph, whilst fuel economy can approach 40mpg on a long motorway journey with gentle driving.
Built to be used, most examples have now covered 100,000 miles plus, but as long as you stick to cherished examples with a full service history and no known faults you should have little to worry about. This black twoowner 2007 E320 Sport Estate at Central Park Car Sales (www.centralpark-carsales.co.uk) would be an ideal choice. Advertised for £4,995 it had covered 107,000 miles and came with an impressive spec that including metallic paint, tinted glass, Bi-Xenon headlights, 19-inch alloys, auto lights and wipers, a factory-fitted tow bar and electrics, electric leather heated seats, Comand sat nav with DVD and Premium audio, climate control, cruise control, Bluetooth and a Brabus D6 ECU upgrade.
Buying Tips
A lot of W211 first owners were company car fleets, with regular servicing and any potential issues dealt with promptly under warranty. But they're now cheap cars so stick to cherished examples.
Scour the bodywork for rust and the interior for tears. Some owners had issues with failed injectors, leaking oil seals and high pressure diesel pumps.
Make sure you have a test drive to check for any strange sounds or behaviour from the throttle, suspension, gearbox and brakes. Tired exhaust catalysts tend to make a tinkling sound which rises with revs, and batteries can drain when left, unless the upgraded battery pack was specified. Failing injector seals make a chuffing sound from the top of the affected cylinder as gas escapes on the compression stroke, and this is expensive to fix.
