Mercedes-Benz CLC 180 Kompressor CL 203

BASED ON THE 203-SERIES C-CLASS, MERCEDES, 2008-2011 CLC coupe featured fresh styling, steering taken from the SLK and a revised suspension designed to provide a sportier driving experience. Projection beam headlights were also added and a big chromed three-pointed Mercedes grille star. Mercedes-Benz CLC 180 Kompressor CL 203.

The rear end styling included slimline LED tail-lights, whilst the large boot added a degree of practicality and the interior fit and finish was a step up on that of the CLC's C-Class Sports Coupe predecessor with a steering wheel taken from the Mercedes CLS. The 141bhp 180K was the most popular model in the range and makes an ideal starter Mercedes for those seeking style on a budget.

Torquey supercharged power delivery provides respectable performance - with a 137mph top speed - whilst careful use of the loud pedal could see you approaching 40mpg on longer journeys. And the hatchback layout means it's a reasonably practical choice too.

Fortunately, many CLCs boast relatively low mileages, with this well-specced silver 68,000-mile 2008 58-plater typical of what you could get for under £5,000. Looking like it's worth a lot more than five grand, this CLC180 Kompressor Sport comes with newly refurbed 18-inch alloys, black leather upholstery, the optional automatic transmission, Parktronic front and rear, climate control, Speedtronic cruise control and tinted glass.

Advertised at a very reasonable £4,746 by Cranford Motors (www.cranford-motors.co.uk) in Suffolk this car also came with a year's MOT and a full service history. Find a good specialist to fettle a well-maintained CLC like this and it should provide years of happy motoring.

Buying tips
Stick to example boasting with a full service history like this one and make sure that any recall work (there were a few recalls) has been carried out, so again ask your local Mercedes dealer who can check this for you for a small fee. Transmissions seem durable although some automatics have needed a new transmission valve control body and check for clutch wear on manuals.

Inspect the body closely for signs of rust especially around the edges of the hatchback boot and watch out for rusty brake pipes, worn or ripped seat trim. misbehaving steering or door mirrors, water in the headlight housing, scuffed alloys and make sure the car comes with two sets of remote keys.
