Mercedes-Benz CLK 350 Sport Cabriolet (1209), Buying tips
Mercedes-Benz CLK 350 Sport Cabriolet (1209). MERCEDES' ELEGANT SECONDgeneration CLK Cabriolet not only looks good but can happily accommodate four adults in comfort. However, with no direct successor, demand reduced, demand and values fell for a few years. But over the last year or two the CLK Cabriolet seems to be coming back on used buyers' radars. And the A209 CLK350 Sport Cabriolet can be bought for a lot less that £5,000. Mercedes-Benz CLK 350 Sport Cabriolet (1209), Buying tips.
Most owners don't use their CLK cabriolet as a daily driver, so mileages tend to be lower than for coupes and that means less wear and tear. And assuming that you won't be driving it every day either, then you can enjoy a throaty 3,498cc six-cylinder petrol engine without worrying too much about your annual fuel bill.
Needless to say, with 268bhp on tap and a handy 258lb ft of torque from 2,400rpm the CLK350's performance is ample, and although this four-seater drop top can hit 155mph we wouldn't recommend testing that out! Despite the thirsty six-cylinder powerplant you can still expect to return up to 30mpg on longer journeys.
West Country specialists Affordable Prestige (www.affordprestigecars.co.uk) had this black 2007 57-plate CLK350 Sport example advertised for just £3,995 at the time of writing and it showed just how much Mercedes-Benz you can get for your money on the current market. With a comprehensive specification, a complete service history and a realistic 129,000 miles on the clock, it also had an MOT until spring 2020.
Buying tips
Usually highly specced by first owners, you should aim to find a car that sports satellite navigation, full leather upholstery, heated electric memory seats, 18-inch AMC alloys wheels, AMG bodykit, automatic climate control, cruise control, park distance control and Bi-Xenon headlamps. But make sure the roof works properly and watch out for rust and worn suspension components.
Other potential issues include corroded alloys, damaged hoods, ECU faults, electrical foibles, rattling windows and knocking from the front ball-joints which can wear out prematurely. Crankshaft position sensors sometimes fail and avoid any CLKS with automatic transmission problems. Stick to loved examples with a full service history and you should be on to a winner.
